In 1984 at Luciano‘s in Austin, Texas, someone made a cassette of the Forrest Goodenough and David Sloan piano and bass duo. It includes 16 jazz standards and is titled Party of Three Your Table is Ready, because that could be heard over their music. It was never released commercially but I have a copy. Both dad and Dave have passed on. So as a tribute to them, I plan to add my vocal track to one of their tunes. Isn’t that thrilling? It’s like shades of Natalie Cole and Nat King Cole. Talk about challenging oneself.
If you think “but Crow’s a folk musician,” let me disagree. The marketers of music make tidy pigeon holes to put people in to help direct you to the kind of music, like Willie Nelson, who you may think of as country musician, but who has recorded jazz tunes.
I believe a good song is a good song. My originals have been described as folk, blues, country, and jazz, which happens to define the current category known as Americana.
