As we watch musicians like Joni Mitchell and Lucinda Williams move from ingenues to grande dames, they no longer sound the same to us. Their voices and their knowledge of the world and themselves are different. After strokes or the march of time, they are functioning with a different toolbox of skills at their disposal. Yet they remain authentically genuine and amaze us again and again.
I’ve found myself reaching for the same vocal skills I had 40 years ago, only to be frustrated.
Eureka!! A solution exists that I never knew.
The settings for most hearing aids are designed for speech recognition. Overtones are filtered out, and sound is compressed and clipped, which makes it almost impossible to pitch-match a vocal recording with an instrumental track.
I met a retired audiologist last week who is also a musician. He understood my problems completely. With him on the phone, my audiologist made a setting for MUSIC that immediately changed my world.
If you or a good friend are not recording but still want to hear the full richness of the music you love, PLEASE find out about the different settings available with your hearing aids—even if your medical professional has not suggested it!
