If you haven’t attended the Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas, you might be surprised to learn that it is very much a songwriter’s event. Most of the performers as well as the attendees create their own songs for the stages and campfires. This has developed over the last 54 years of the festival. Kids, old folks, beginners, and pros all have something unique to sing.
I conducted a workshop for 15 folks called “Getting to the Songs That Only You Can Write”, highlighting the fact that everyone is qualified because no two people have identical life experiences, skills, intuitions, and abilities to focus.
Janet Feld and Brian QTN were delightful guests exemplifying some of the principles and trail heads (different places to begin to get to your song) that we outlined. The quote of the session came from Janet—“Dare to Suck”, which encouraged us all to throw caution out the window!!
Since the festival, I have one new “song coaching” private student, who I really adore. She’s got all the marbles, just needs a little push here and there! I only accept a couple of students since I’m so busy writing, recording, and enjoying the woods.
Never disrespect one of your creations because it’s no longer brand new!! My songs The Gypsy in the Photograph and Ridin’ in the Sky were both written around 1974. I heard from Art Garfunkel’s guitarist, Tab Laven, that he is making a new album of his own music including Gypsy! Yahoo! Tab played on Michael Johnson’s recording of the tune decades ago and his new version is excellent.
The music director for the series Dark Winds nearly used Ridin’ in the Sky for an episode!!! I love the show and am thrilled to have had a song considered.
Tip: when you play a song on stage or around a campfire you are creating a movie in a bubble midway between you and the listeners. If you suddenly get self-conscious—the bubble pops. Stay focused on the story to make magic.
So it has been a fun week for me and I hope it’s been the same for you.
Don’t hesitate to email me if you have any questions or comments
Hugs and wishes,
